friday afternoon

wanting to avoid the friday afternoon traffic
we take a shortcut through pinetown, durban
as our car jumps into a side road
my eye falls on a group of five men
sitting on the pavement
and with expert focus
rubbing body lotion over their hands and arms

men in a row
giving each other the bottle
 - the bottle of cream -
smiling because the weekend has arrived
reason to rub away the dryness

those few seconds i watch
this huddle of shining black skin
play off in front of me with such a lyrical slowness
enough time to foresee
the three stanzas that
will shape this poem
